We hope that everyone is looking forward to another great season. We’ve managed to retain the majority of the squad from last year and made a couple of welcome additions, so we go into our first game with 30 players which is excellent. TRAINING: As last season, our training time will be Wednesday evening at the club from 6:30 til 8pm. unfortunately; we won’t have the use of Innsworth camp this season so it will be the usual mudbath at times during the season. Ordinarily, we will only play on a Sunday so as last season, if there is no game then you have the weekend off!! The last pre-season training will be this Wednesday (Sept 3rd) and will be the last that you will require to pay your £1 for. We have been disappointed by the response from the lads generally to bringing their £1. We have regularly been getting 20 lads there each week. We have been training for 8 weeks. We have collected £91 so far. We’ll leave you to do the maths!!!! If your guilt gets the better of you, then please feel free to bring your contributions next time we train. It’s worth reminding everyone that the changing rooms are open for training and showers available. It may not be so bad now, but when the weather gets really bad, even a change of clothes is welcome before you step back into your parents cars or the club!! FIXTURES: Once again, we have a busy fixture list this season with many familiar names. The list as it stands at the moment is as follows but as always it may be subject to change: Sept 7th Training Sept 14th Day Off Sept 21st Hucclecote Away Sept 28th Old Patesians Away Oct 5th Brockworth Away Oct 12th Old Richians Home Oct 19th Clifton Away Oct 26th Ledbury Home Nov 2nd Widden OB Home Nov 9th Hereford Home Nov 16th Evesham Home Nov 23rd Nov 30th Dec 7th Hucclecote Home Dec 14th Dursley Away Dec 21st Old Reigatians Away Dec 26th Dads Vs Lads Home Jan 4th Old Richians Away Jan 11th Evesham Away Jan 18th Jan 25th Feb 1st County Cup Feb 8th County Cup Feb 15th County Cup Feb 22nd Mar 1st Mar 8th County Cup QF Mar 15th Mar 22nd Clifton Home March 29th Apr 5th Cheltenham/Cup SF Home Apr 12th Easter Apr 19th Plate Final Apr 26th County Cup Final As usual, we will be trying to fill in some of the blanks and given the clash on Apr 5th, we will be looking to rearrange the Cheltenham fixture as well. Watch this space. PLAYING KIT: As many of you will be aware, our playing shirts are coming to the end of their use and we have been trying to get a new set for some time. During the summer, we have been trying to find a sponsor who will cover the cost of the shirts for us. We will need approx 35 shirts (so we have some spares) and this will cost around £1,600. The shirts are ready to be ordered but we have yet to find a sponsor so paying for them becomes an issue. Although we are having a conversation with a potential sponsor, the shirts will take 4 weeks and as such need to be ordered asap if we are to have them for our fixtures. Without a sponsor, we have taken the decision to fund them as follows: We will ask all players to “buy” their own shirt at a cost of £45 each. We need £20 of this when we place the order and the remainder in 4 weeks time when the shirts arrive. We have lined up some bag packing at Tesco again to raise some funds and the plan would be that any money raised would come back to you to reimburse for the shirts (hopefully in full but at the very least will make a substantial contribution to it). We are discussing this with Tesco at the moment but we have asked for a Friday and Saturday in October and we await their confirmation. We appreciate that this is already an expensive time of the year with back to school things and membership fees etc but unfortunately due to the lack of response for a potential sponsor we have no other option. Therefore, can we ask you to bring your cheques (made payable to Longlevens RFC) for £20 to us by this Sunday (Sept 7th) so that we can place the order. If we do manage to secure a sponsor at the last minute then monies we raise at Tesco can go towards other things. In addition, the AGM agreed that the playing shorts would be changed from the traditional plain white to the red shorts with white panelling. Some of you have already got these but for those who haven’t they should be available from the club on a Sunday morning priced at £20 per pair. Socks etc are also available from the club shop every Sunday (just ask behind the bar). Don’t forget that you should all have the blue training kit, shower proof top and trousers from last season which if lost are replaceable at a cost of £50. Finally, as with last season, our after match dress code will be black trousers, shoes and the new club polo shirt. Most of you were given these for tour but if you have not yet received yours then please let Mark know. OLD REIGATIANS: You will have seen from the fixture list that we are due to play against this side on Sunday Dec 21st at their ground in Reigate, Surrey. You will recall we played them last season at our place when they were touring and whilst they gave our “B” side a bit of a pasting, our “A” side gave them an excellent game. They were good fun off the field as well and have invited our U16s and U17s to travel up to play them the weekend before Christmas. We have accepted this offer. They have offered to put all the lads up for one night (adults will need to stay separately in a hotel). It has also worked out well, as this is the same weekend that Gloucester are playing at London Irish who of course, play at Reading. Although the date of the fixture has yet to be confirmed we will take this match in as part of the weekend. So the plan would be: Leave Longlevens around lunchtime on Saturday to travel to Reigate Meet our hosts and settle in and then return to the rugby club where they will put on a function (either Disco or live band) for us on the Saturday night. Play Sunday morning Leave Reigate at approx 1pm and travel to Reading to watch Gloucester play London Irish Arrive at Longlevens early Sunday evening. We will arrange a coach for the weekend but as yet we have no idea of costs. We will finalise this in the next few weeks but will include the cost of travel and ticket for the Gloucester game. If we come up with a sponsor for the shirts and have a good fund raising session at Tesco then we would hope that this trip be very heavily subsidised but we will see. If they move the Gloucester game to the Saturday then we will simply stop off on the way to Reigate to watch the match and travel home direct from Reigate on the Sunday. We need to start to gather numbers for this trip, so if you can let us know asap if you are available to travel. BAG PACKING AND OTHER FUND RAISING: As mentioned above, we are trying to organise another bag packing session with Tesco. At the moment, we have suggested replicating what we did last year i.e. Friday evening (5-8pm) and Sat morning (9-1). We have asked for the 10th and 11th of October. We await confirmation. We are aware that Gloucester play Biarritz on the Saturday but it is a 5:30 kick off so shouldn’t cause too many issues. The idea would be the same again in that we would expect ALL players to take part. We will again be quite strict with the monies raised in that if you do not have a valid reason for missing it then you will not benefit from the funds raised. As soon as we have the date confirmed, we will let you know. We will need to continue our fund raising throughout the season. The best way is always to try and involve other people rather than expecting our families (who pay out enough as it is) to bear the brunt of it. If anyone has any ideas as to how we can raise extra funds, please let us know. TOUR: As always, we will be planning to tour again this season. Jersey was a great success but we are always conscious of the cost, particularly if the bulk of our fund raising goes towards the shirts this season. At the moment, we have a few possible destinations such as France, Ireland, Surrey, Scotland but are always open to suggestion. We would like to be in a position to finalise a destination and date by the end of October at the very latest so we need to get moving. Any thoughts??? We obviously need to try and avoid cup dates so any of the blank dates on the fixture list would seem favourite. We would like to get a few of the parents involved in a tour sub committee and if you are interested in being part of this let us know asap. SUNDAY 7th SEPTEMBER This is the first Sunday of the season and will be the date for registering at the club. As you know, it will be fairly manic at the club on that day with everyone there but we would like to get together at the club all the same. We don’t plan to train as such but will use the time to discuss a few things off the pitch such as team tactics and to discuss our plans for each of you. We will probably try and disappear into one of the changing rooms upstairs so if you can meet at the club for 9:45 we will take it from there. MEMBERSHIP: This season for the first time in a number of years, the AGM voted for membership costs to increase. The subs will be £55 per season. This can either be paid in two instalments - £30 by the end of September and £25 at the end of January or ain one lump sum by the end of September. As always, it is a thankless task for us to collect this money in as some people unfortunately need chasing. To combat this, the club voted for a penalty payment to be introduced if the minimum payment of £30 is not received by the end of September. For those cases, a further £10 will be added to the subs. We do hope that none of our lads will incur this penalty as we should all know the system but with 30 lads registered it is easy for us to exclude anyone who has not paid their subs from playing. As usual, payment should be made to us (ideally by cheque payable to Longlevens RFC). Please place the payment in an envelope marked with the players name. The players name and age group should also be written on the back of the cheque. Payment can be made from this week and as always we would appreciate your support in paying promptly. SENIOR & COLTS RUGBY: Once again, we are the senior age group at the club. This brings with it a huge responsibility for all of us as we set the tone and standard for the rest of the junior club to follow. In addition, we have the opportunity to provide a bridge between the senior and junior clubs. From this season, our players will have the opportunity to play in three different sides. Of course they will play U17 rugby but they have the opportunity to play Colts (U19) rugby and also Senior rugby. We will be taking the opportunity to introduce as many of our players as possible into the Colts games dependent as always on being able to cope playing against older opposition. The Colts games are usually planned for Sunday afternoons and there is a Gloucestershire league which takes place before Christmas so there will be plenty of opportunities for extra rugby. Indeed, on some Sundays where we have a game in the morning, we may ask some of you to “rest” from the U17 fixture and play in the Colts fixture instead. This will allow all of our players to get even more rugby. This will work itself out as the season progresses. In addition, as soon as our players reach their 17th birthday then they are eligible to play Senior Rugby (except for front row who need to be 18). The club is trying to get together a 3rd XV to ease the introduction for our lads where they will play with some of the more mature senior players against similar standard of player. Once again, there will be an opportunity for a lot of our lads to take part in this as well but again we will see how that pans out. The Senior games usually tale place on a Saturday afternoon. As a way of introducing our lads into the Senior club and hopefully building bridges, the coaches of the senior side have invited our lads to train with them on a Tuesday and Thursday. We have agreed that the first of these will be this Thursday (Sept 4th) and Mark will accompany the lads. Meet at the club at 6:30. We can then see how it works from there. Whilst all of this is great for the development of the lads, we are both committed to ensuring that our lads are not “over played”. Their first loyalty will be to the U17s and we need to ensure that takes place throughout the season and the “extra” rugby is not to the detriment of our side. Can we please ask that if any of the lads are asked to play for either the Colts or the Seniors that they let us know and agree it with us first to ensure that there is no conflict. For example, it may be we have a big cup game the following week and are keen for players to be fully fit. CAPTAINCY: Rory did an excellent job for us last season but we will need to decide who will lead us again this season. We would like to have a captain in place as soon as possible and will try and resolve this when we get together on Sunday. If you have any nominations, please let us know before that date. COUNTY TRIALS: We have been invited to put forward names for the trials for Gloucestershire U18s. We have selected our maximum of 12 players (who have been advised separately) to go forward for the trials that will be held as follows: Mon 15th September 4pm Cheltenham College Thurs 18th September 4pm Hartpury Mon 22nd September 4pm Stroud RFC As soon as the trials have been allocated, we will let you know the venue you have to attend. For those successful there will be warm up games against Berkshire on 28th September (at Cheltenham Civil Service), North Midlands on 5th Oct (Away) and a final squad session at Kings School on 12th October. The divisional matches will be: Sun 26th Oct Cornwall Home (Bristol) Sun 2nd Nov Devon Away (Crediton RFC) Tues 18th Nov Somerset Home (Cleve 6pm) Following on from that there will be trials for the South West at some stage in November. Hopefully some of our lads will come through this process but we’ll keep you informed as things happen. WELSH EXILES: Once again, the Exiles will be holding sessions each month for those players who are qualified to represent Wales through either birth, parents or grand parents (Rory and Nico!!!). The sessions this season will again be held at Ledbury RFC starting on Monday September 15th at 7pm. A number of our lads took part last season and thoroughly enjoyed it and received representative honours so if you fancy it, let Mark know as soon as possible. ELVs As we are sure the rugby statto’s are fully aware, this season sees the introduction of a number of ELVs (Experimental Law Variations) which will impact on some of the rules our lads will play this season. We have tried to educate all of the lads over the summer and (worryingly) most of them seem to have taken it in although the proof of the pudding will be when we actually play a game. Hopefully, they will be able to take on board some of the obvious tactical advantages of the new rules. PAINT BALLING: We have the opportunity to take all of the lads (and a few invited adults) paintballing for the day in either Hereford or Bristol. The games and the hire of the equipment will be totally free and all the lads have to pay for is the paint (approx £10 for 100 paintballs). We will be looking into possible dates but the ideal would be to go on one of the Sundays we don’t have a game. Again, if you’d like to come along then just let us know. That’s all for now but if you think of anything you need to know just shout. Here’s to a great season.
